The remains of All Saints Church, Dunwich, as seen on a postcard from 1904.

The remains of All Saints Church, Dunwich, as seen on a postcard from 1904.

The church has completely gone now and the sea has claimed nearly all of the graveyard.

There were once 8 or 9 parish churches there - Dunwich was an important port, not much smaller than Ipswich in 1200.

Storms eroded the coastline, though, and deposited sand at the river mouth, blocking the harbour. Then cliffs housing the upper part of the town were washed away.

he now tiny village with its excellent museum is a popular destination for school visits - but it is unlikely that adventurous children will any longer find bones protruding from the vicinity of All Saints.
