Post Mill, near Bury St Edmunds. The small sail, at the back, turned the upper part of the mill into the wind. This enabled the main sails to work effectively. In tower mills - built of brick - it was only a smaller 'cap' at the top that turned into the wind. The same is true of wooden smock mills. In the 19 th century, some millers installed engines, to use on still days.
