The start of the International Air Race, Mildenhall to Melbourne, 1934. This aeroplane, a Douglas DC2 owned by Royal Dutch Airlines, came second. Amy Johnson, the famous 'Queen of the Air' also took part in the race. Shortly afterwards the airfield became home for the first of the RAF's new-style bomber bases.
