A Guide to using EESOP

What does the Advanced Search do?

Choosing 'Within'
This allows you to choose the title, creator, subject or description of a particular record. ' Title ' refers to the name of the record. This is different from a keyword search so you should type in the exact title. ' Creator ' refers the person,

organisation or service that made the record. ' Subject ' is typically a key word or phrase that describes the record. ' Description ' is an account of the content of the record.

Choosing 'And', 'Or, 'Not'

This is known as Boolean searching. It allows you to either extend or narrow your searches. 'And' allows you to search for records that contain two or more words that you specify. Searching for 'Suffolk' and 'Castle' will only find records in which both words occur. Records with just the word 'Suffolk' or 'Castle' will be excluded. 'Or' allows you to search for records that contain any of the words that you specify. Searching for 'Sussex' or 'Castle' will find records that contain either or both of these words. 'Not' allows you to search for records that can exclude a particular word. Searching for 'Suffolk' not 'Castle' will find records that contains the word 'Suffolk' but does not contain the word 'Castle'. You do need to be careful using not because you have to be clear about what word you are looking for and what word you want to leave out and put them in the right order. 'Suffolk' not 'Castle' is a different search to 'Castle' not 'Suffolk'. /td>
